This homemade vapor rub is a simple, from-scratch alternative made with ingredients I trust and keep on hand during cold season. It’s one of those quiet homemaking staples... prepared ahead of time, tucked into the cupboard, and ready when someone needs a little extra comfort.

Most of us remember being home, sick as kids. Laid up on the couch, a mug full of warm, nourishing broth, the TV humming in the background, and our mom's or grandma's rubbing the soothing vapors of vapor rub on our chests to clear our noses and calm our coughs.
I have some great, if you can call being sick good, memories of such. Bob Barker announcing the showcase winner, absolutely miserable... but somehow soothed by some Vick's and a warm towel wrapped around my neck.
While I love the nostalgia behind a blue container or vapor rub sitting on the coffee table, I'm not a huge fan of petroleum by-products. Petroleum is a known endocrine disruptor, and rubbing it on the largest organ in/on your body isn't the best of ideas, in my opinion. So, I have chosen to make my own, endocrine disruptor-free, vapor rub.
Why Make Your Own Vapor Rub
You Control the Ingredients. When you make your own vapor rub, there are no artificial fragrances, dyes, or petroleum-based fillers. Just simple oils and waxes you recognize.
It’s Simple, Not Fussy. This isn’t a project that takes all afternoon. It’s one small pot, a handful of ingredients, and a few minutes of attention. The result is a smooth, effective rub that stores well and lasts through the season.
It Fits a Prepared Home. This is the kind of thing I make on an ordinary day, not because anyone is sick yet, but because being prepared brings peace. Like broth in the freezer or jars on the shelf, this vapor rub is part of quietly caring for the people in your home.
Gentle, Familiar Comfort. The scent is clean and soothing without being overpowering. It’s the kind of comfort that feels familiar, rubbed onto the chest, the soles of the feet, or used as part of a bedtime routine when someone isn’t feeling well.
Ingredients for Homemade Vapor Rub

Coconut Oil. Coconut oil acts as the base of the rub, making it smooth and easy to apply. It melts easily, absorbs well, and helps dilute the essential oils so they’re gentler on skin.
Beeswax. Beeswax gives this homemade vapor rub its solid, balm-like texture. It helps everything set properly while creating a breathable barrier on the skin... without relying on petroleum-based ingredients.
Eucalyptus Essential Oil. Eucalyptus is commonly used to support clear breathing and ease congestion. Its scent is fresh, clean, and immediately recognizable in traditional vapor rubs.
Peppermint Essential Oil. Peppermint adds a light cooling sensation and helps open the airways. Only a small amount is needed for it to be effective without being overpowering.
Camphor Essential Oil. Camphor is a classic ingredient in traditional chest rubs and contributes to that familiar, comforting scent many of us associate with cold care. It’s used sparingly here for warmth and aromatic support.
Note: Camphor and strong essential oils are best used sparingly and are not recommended for infants or very young children. This vapor rub is intended for adults and older children only.
Lavender Essential Oil. Just a touch of lavender softens the blend and adds a calming note, making this vapor rub especially nice for evening or bedtime use.
How to Make Homemade Vapor Rub
Melt the base. In a small heat-safe jar or double boiler, gently melt the coconut oil and beeswax together, stirring occasionally until fully liquefied.
Remove from heat and cool slightly.. Take the mixture off the heat and allow it to cool just a bit, making it warm to the touch, but not hot. This helps preserve the essential oils.
Add the essential oils. Stir in the eucalyptus, peppermint, camphor, and lavender oils, mixing well so they’re evenly distributed throughout the mixture.

Pour into tins. Carefully pour the liquid vapor rub into a clean tin or jar.
Let it set. Allow the vapor rub to cool completely at room temperature until solid, then seal with a lid.
Storage

Store your homemade vapor rub in a cool, dry place with the lid on tight. A small tin like this keeps well for several months and is easy to tuck into a cupboard or bedside drawer.
How to Use
Apply to the chest and back. Rub a small amount onto the chest and upper back to help ease congestion and support comfortable breathing.
Use on the feet at bedtime. Many people like to rub a small amount onto the soles of the feet and cover with socks before bed for overnight comfort.
Incorporate into a nighttime routine. This vapor rub works especially well as part of a quiet bedtime rhythm... warm pajamas, a bowl of broth or tea, and rest.
Use as needed. A little goes a long way. Reapply as needed, especially during cold season.
For external use only. Avoid the eyes and sensitive areas. As with any product containing essential oils, this rub is best used on adults and older children, and a patch test is always a good idea.
This homemade vapor rub isn’t about reinventing the wheel. It’s about keeping the comfort we remember, while making thoughtful choices that fit the way we live now. Like broth simmering on the stove or jars cooling on the counter, it’s one of those small preparations that makes a home feel steady, cared for, and ready.
