We’ve become a culture obsessed with busyness. We’re occupied from the time we get up, until the time we lay down our weary heads at night. We work too much, sleep too little, and eat crap for food.
Stress overcomes us, we’re short with the ones we love, and we miss out on way too much. Our phones have become our link to life and we miss what’s Right. In. Front. Of. Us.
The kids grow up in the blink of an eye. Divorce parties are now a thing. And everyone is climbing a ladder to reach the proverbial top first. We compete over things that don’t matter, at all.

1. Declutter your life
Not only should you DECLUTTER material possessions, but also relationships, habits, and your mind. By getting rid of the unnecessary and the things that don’t make you happy, you’ll have more time to spend on things that actually matter. And you’ll be happier. So, take a look at the above list and toss the junk you don’t need (and the crap relationships).
2. Read more books
Put down the phone, turn off the computer and the TV and pick up a book. You’ll be amazed what the simple act of reading a real book can do for you. In fact, do yourself and your kids a favor and make it a family activity. Pick a book to read together as a family. We love reading the Harry Potter series together as a family of an evening. Just a chapter or two. It helps the kids settle down, encourages reading skills for them, and doesn’t keep everyone wired up from watching a screen.
3. Spend more time outside
We’re coming in to FALL which is the perfect time to spend more time enjoying the outdoors. The heat isn’t as oppressive, there’s the beautiful changing leaves to inspire us. And there’s apple orchards and pumpkin patches! But in any season, you should be enjoying the outdoors. We need to connect with nature. Breathe the fresh air, feel the sun on our backs. It’s necessary to feel connected to this thing we call life.
4. Eat healthier
Food today is surrounded by convenience. We’re all so busy that stopping in the drive-thru is more common than a real meal at home. Use your slow cooker, or try an instant pot, freezer cooking… you name it. Even if you don’t eat a healthy meal at home every night (let’s be realistic here), you should be doing this more often than not. With all of this convenience we’ve been afforded there are tons of ways to cook food without even being around. So, utilize some of that technology and eat HEALTHIER.
We need quiet. Time to reflect and room to breathe. Meditation is a great way to do these things. It’s a time you can spend alone, in the quiet, and reflect. It will help you realize what really matters and help you become a calmer, more patient person. Meditation is amazing.
Unleash your creative side and make something, anything. Or pick up a coloring book and color. It doesn’t have to be Van Gogh amazing, it just has to be something you did with your own two hands. Look on PINTEREST for some inspiration if you must. But, just make something. Even food! Get your kids involved. Just do something that inspires you to use your own two hands and unleash your creativity.
We live in a culture where everything is constantly go, go, go. We need to slow down. Way down. Instead of rushing, we really should be taking our time. If you’re too booked, you need to learn to say no. There are so many hours in the day/week/month/year. Don’t let them go to waste. Spend them doing meaningful things like spending time outdoors, enjoying your family, and less time rushing around. Rushing just makes life no fun and it should be fun. Enjoy it instead of rushing through it.
Life is short, no one is promised a tomorrow. So, take the time to simplify. Bring the things that really matter to the top of your priority list. Everything else can wait. Sure, we have to work, and there are obligations that have to be met. But, we have a tendency to complicate things much more than necessary.
Take some time today and over the next week to practice the steps I’ve mentioned above. Love more. Breathe deeper. Enjoy the fresh air and your family and stop worrying about the things you cannot change. You’ll be a better person for it.
