The everyday clutter of life, motherhood, and the like is enough to overwhelm most anyone. If you’re finding yourself in the trenches of finding a way to organize your home, our simple home organization tips are just for you.
Most days in our home start off well. I get stuff going, the kids are cooperative, and everything seems like it’s going to go right.
Then something, every single day, throws a wrench in it. The kids get cranky, the dog makes a mess, the baby won’t stay out of things. Something always comes up that turns my productivity upside down.
But, I strive to keep my house cleaned up. I’m incredibly type-a and messes overwhelm me. I need the house to at least somewhat resemble a house instead of looking like a bomb went off at any given moment. It’s how I keep calm and maintain what little bit of sanity I have left. I’m just the kind that doesn’t like messes.
These are 10 simple ways that I keep my home halfway organized and maintain my sanity from the day to day chaos that is modern life.
Simple Home Organization Tips
Tidy Up in the Morning
While the last thing we want to do is go to bed with a mess, cleaning up in the morning is often the best time to do so. We are more rested, our minds sharpest, and we make better judgement calls to whether or not we actually need the thing in question. If we don’t, we can simply toss it into the nearest donate pile and move on with our day. If we do, we can quickly put it into its place and move along.
Keep a Running To-Do List
I have a pad of paper sitting in my kitchen (the most central location in our home). If I think up something that needs done, I have to write it down. I get side-tracked. Kids get my attention, or meals need prepared, animals cared for, etc., and I’ll forget it. I also keep a running grocery list. We have one of these and I hang it on the refrigerator. When I notice we are out of, or almost out of, something I write it on the pad to add to the grocery list when it’s time to go shopping.
Make a Plan
Along the same lines as a running to-do, you need a daily plan/routine. It doesn’t have to be a set-in-stone, you’re doing this at exactly 10AM for exactly 10 minutes kind of plan. Just, these things need done today. If you have a plan or routine, you won’t forget about something that needed done and you won’t worry half the day that you did forget something. Because, it’s all written down.
Keep Down the Clutter
We often have so many things we could rid ourselves of and not even notice we were missing. Clutter is debilitating and distracting. It keeps us from being our most productive and it keeps us tied to stuff we don’t even need. Regularly go through and get rid of the clutter. Whether it be daily, weekly, monthly, whatever works for you. You can get rid of the junk you’ve accumulated on a routine basis and it will help keep your home neat and organized.
Make the Bed
Yep. I said it. Make your bed every single morning. Have your kids make their beds, too. Every day, without fail. No excuses. It takes less than 5 minutes and makes a heck of a difference in how your day goes. It helps you wake up, it can help you be more productive, and you know if you’re making up your bed, you’re not going to walk into a cluttered mess of blankets when you’re ready to call it a night. Making it helps your body realize that rest is over and it’s time to start a day. You’ll love the ritual of turning down the sheets when it’s time to turn in, too.
Keep your Kitchen Counters (and sink) Cleared
Put your dishes in the dishwasher throughout the day, run it after dinner. Maybe you’re one that loves emptying it as soon as it’s done, right before bed. Maybe you’re like me and like to empty it first thing in the AM. Just make sure you’re cleaning as you go and keeping the clutter and mess off of your counters. This will not only help you maintain a cleaner, more organized home. It will help you stick to cooking your meals because you don’t have to clean up a mess just to prepare the meal.
Get Everything Together Before You Start
I don’t know how many times I’ve went to start a project, whether it be cooking, cleaning, or what have you, got halfway through and not had everything I needed. Then, I’m rummaging around, moving stuff out of the way trying to find the thing(s) that I need. Get all of your supplies or ingredients together before you start. Then, if you are able, put them away (or set them out of the way) as you use them. This helps you be more productive and keeps your things organized because you’re not rushing to find some obscure ingredient or supply that is shoved all the way to the back of the cabinet.
Have a Tidy-Up Race in the Evenings
To get my kids to clean up, we have a race. It consists of having a basket and a good attitude to make it fun. We throw everything into a basket. Then, take the basket around to put the things in their proper places. If they choose not to participate, I clean them up and the basket gets put up on a shelf in my closet until they start contributing to the clean up again. I don’t like to go to bed with toys scattered about, so it generally consists of just toys and putting the blankets and pillows back up on the couch.
These are just a few incredibly simple ways to keep your home, and even your life, a little more organized. Hopefully, they’ll help you maintain a neater home, and a less frazzled day to day life.
