In an ideal world, we would never need a sore throat remedy. The natural preventatives we use every cold and flu season would keep us from ever getting sick in the first place. Alas, we don’t live in a perfect world and it never works out.
No matter how hard I try, every year one child will get a cold, then the other and inevitably…
momma gets sick.
I tell them not to breathe on me. I don’t like seeing them sick, don’t get me wrong, but a sick momma is ten times worse when at least one of them is also sick. It makes for miserable times. Especially when we’re still trying to read our daily lessons and…
I can’t talk without being in pain. If I can even find my voice.
Over the past few years, I’ve gained quite the arsenal of natural remedies for various ailments. Our natural sore throat remedies are no exception. I have four favorites that I use depending on the situation. If I’m treating the kids, I usually use cough drops. If I’m treating myself or Trevor it could be any of the four.
These all work well, they’re simple, and consist of stuff most people have lying around in their cupboards anyway. My kids will drink the hot drink or suck on throat lozenges without any complaints. The garlic and the gargle are another thing entirely.
Four Natural Sore Throat Remedies
Note: All of these remedies (save the garlic which isn’t suitable for children anyhow) contain honey so they are not suitable for children under the age of one.
Remedy #1 Old Hot Drink
*This one is my favorite!
- 1 Cup Hot Water (as hot as you can stand to drink)
- 1 Tablespoon Bragg Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar
- Juice from 1/2 a lemon
- 1 Tablespoon of Raw Honey
Put the honey in hot water, stir it around to sort of “dissolve” it. Next add the apple cider vinegar and juice from half a lemon. Stir. Sip while hot. Repeat as necessary.
Note: Kids usually like this drink, have them sip it warm, obviously not hot, but before it is cooled off completely.
Remedy #2 Garlic
Garlic contains a chemical called allicin. Allin is capable of killing the bacteria that causes strep. Slice one clove of garlic in half, place one half in each cheek and suck on it like you would a throat lozenge. The spice will surprise you, but it calms your throat too!!
Note: This isn’t for kids, and while I’m not all about conventional medicine, strep can be serious and should be treated promptly and appropriately.
Remedy #3 Sage Gargle
- 1 teaspoon dry Sage
- 1 teaspoon Bragg Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar
- 1 teaspoon Raw Honey
- 1 Cup Boiling Water
Steep sage in boiling water for 10 minutes. Add apple cider vinegar and honey. Mix. Gargle 4 times daily while symptoms persist.
Remedy #4 Homemade Throat Lozenges
- 1 Cup Raw Honey
- 2 Tablespoons Lemon Juice
- 1/4 Teaspoon of Peppermint Extract
- Candy Thermometer
- or Parchment Paper and Olive Oil
Put honey into a saucepan. Bring to boil over medium heat. Clip your candy thermometer to the side. Stir frequently until the mixture reaches 300° Farenheit (hard-crack stage). Watch your honey the entire time, it will scorch easily, adjust the heat as necessary! Stir in lemon juice and peppermint extract. Have your candy mold or some parchment paper covered with some olive oil at the ready. When your mixture is ready, drop the mixture into the individual molds or by teaspoonful onto the greased parchment paper. Allow mixture to cool and harden (about 20 minutes). Store drops in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Kids love these! Another idea? Cool the mixture onto popsicle sticks for a lollipop lozenge!
Now, it’s time to sit back with my hot drink, breathe in some essential oils from our diffuser, and rest.
This too shall pass.
